About Occupational Diving - Diving At Work - Diving for Work

Many divers with Sports Certifications are actually breaking the law in many Countries as they are not engaged in sports or recreational diving but deemed in some Countries to be "Commercial Diving"...  This may seem confusing so we offer a clear definition below.

Any aspect of diving operations not directly associated with recreational diving, as Sports or Technical Diving activities and where divers are paid for services as income or in kind, is generally considered to be "AT WORK" Diving and therefore "Occupational".

These types of diving activities generally offer a much greater degree of risk of death or serious injury then recreational diving and as such, sports and technical divers should seek "Specialist Training", for working diving activities and projects.  Also employers may be breaking the law by allowing NON Qualified and uncertified divers to operate...

Occupational Diving is defined as in-Land or In-Shore, diving for paid employment or personal gain. Commercial diving is also In-Land and In-Shore but also Offshore...

Training Terms and Conditions

As our members will be aware, there are a range of export regulations and restrictions which affect business and trade with many countries of the world.  These may apply to International standards as well as financial restrictions.

These include restrictions on dual-goods and technology as well as the various sanctions regimes (UN, US and EU) targeting individual states including, by way of example, regulation (EU) No 833/2014 which is directed at Russia (individually and collectively the “Restrictions”). ITDA Diving Supervisor Overview

In the early years of commercial diving in support of the oil and Gas industry in many regions, the diver in the water was normally supervised (i.e. watched over from the surface) by one of the other divers. As techniques and equipment developed, some of the more experienced divers became recognised as supervisors and many of those who demonstrated a capacity for this responsibility ceased to dive and became full time dive supervisors.

Legislation in the UK, Norway and other countries introduced since the 1970s requires that the diving supervisor be responsible for all aspects of the diving operation which they are controlling and that they must not dive themselves unless another properly appointed diving supervisor is present and has taken over responsibility for the dive operation. It also requires that the supervisor should have been a diver with suitable experience for the project(s) undertaken to supervise.

The diving contractor, who in such areas is required by law to appoint the diving supervisor in writing, relied in the past upon personal assessment as the principal method of selection, although a number of offshore contractors organised in-house examinations and training courses. ITDA has formalised this process into general areas such as: In-Land - In-Shore and Off-Shore Dive Supervison.

Taking into special account the various types and scope of projects and the health and safety risks involved for divers in these environments.

Scope and Objectives

 

The ITDA Offshore Diving Supervisor Program covers all diving personnel either acting as a diving supervisor or superintendent or gaining experience in order to become one. (Trainee Supervisor) It applies to all personnel supervising dives in the water using surface orientated (Air/SSA) and bell diving techniques (hereinafter referred to as: ‘air diving’ and ‘bell diving’ respectively). Other forms of Occupational Diving, like Underwater welding etc. May also use our Supervisor Programs.

This program also addresses the role of the diving supervisor in relation to general diving operations and the qualities required of a diving supervisor. The basic requirements in order to commence training as a diving supervisor are laid down, together with the normal route for gaining experience, leading to appointment as a diving supervisor.
